The penny has droppedの語源
皆さんこんにちは。英語を学ぼうとする前に娘の日本語教育で時間をごっそり持っていかれて最近停滞というより後退している私でございます。
さて今回はイディオムのThe penny has droppedについて詳しく調べたので、ここでお伝えしようと思います。
まず語源から。ネイティブの友人の説明によると
「自動販売機はお金を入れ、それが下に落ちると動くでしょ？だけれど落ちないでそこ留まると動かない。落ちたから動いた。その様子を表わしているんだよ」
だそうです。
インターネットに詳しい説明がないかなと思って調べたらこんな記述を見つけました。
内容的には友人が説明してくれた内容と一緒です。
It was originally used with allusion to the mechanism of a penny-in-the-slot machine.
ちなみにこのIdiomですが、イギリス英語で主に使われているようです。
（アメリカではペニーという通貨はないですしね…）
フォーマルというよりインフォーマルな感じです。
また
- The penny has dropped(現在完了形)
- The penny dropped(過去形)
どちらも正しいです。
The penny has droppedの意味
さて語源が分かると大体意味が分かって来ますね。辞書にはこう書いてあります。
—used to say that someone finally understands something after not understanding it for a time
説明すると、
今まで分からなかったのが説明か何かのきっかけでようやく分かる様子。
例えば
「あ、そういうこと！？」
「あー、なるほどねぇ！」
等に代表される、まさにこれアハ体験ですね！
私なんか英語のイディオムを聞いてポカーンとしている時に詳しい説明を受けると毎回これです。

応用編
更に応用するとこんな言い方も出来るようです。
下記のように前置詞を伴った用法も出来るんですね。

Idiomは使う事で馴染んでいく
